Her Story

Shellby, a desert tortoise estimated to be about four years old at the time, was found in 2004 wandering the streets of Ontario, California, and was taken in by a family who kept her for about a year. During a party, their kitchen plumbing had a problem that one of their guests, Dr. Joe Holliday, fixed.  Knowing that one of his degrees was in biology, they gave him the tortoise as a thank you gift. Shellby lived in his garden in Long Beach for three years before he donated her to Wildworks. He felt she would be happier in the warmer Topanga climate where she would also get more attention. She is friendly and loves green veggies.
